On Signal

About us

Signal is Ecoportal’s US energy desk. We follow the wind turbines, solar fields, ships and boats that are reshaping how America makes and moves energy, and turn the day’s engineering, research and industry news into clear, accurate stories anyone can follow.

Our story

Signal is the newest edition of Ecoportal, a digital newspaper that has been publishing since 1999. It sits alongside The Pulse, our English-language magazine for science and nature, and focuses on one question: what does the energy transition look like on the ground and on the water in the United States?

We report on offshore wind farms rising off America’s coasts, onshore projects across the plains, photovoltaic plants and rooftops, and the vessels, ferries and ports that build, service and increasingly run on clean power. Every story is grounded in primary sources such as federal agencies, grid operators, project filings and peer-reviewed research.

What we cover

Four desks, one focus: the hardware of America’s energy future.

How we work

Primary sources first

We link to the original data, filing or study behind every key claim, so readers can check it themselves.

Clear, not simplified

Technical topics are explained in plain language without losing the numbers that matter.

Corrections, fast

If we get something wrong, we fix it and say so. Send corrections through our contact page.
